Ounce of Prevention is a local organization whose focus is to increase breast cancer awareness and support systems through fundraising and events. Co-chaired by Jennifer Houin and Jessica Oliver, Ounce of Prevention's impact is dependent upon the various events throughout the year and the many volunteers who help pull them together.
How it all began: Jennifer Oliver Houin and Jessica Oliver were introduced personally to breast cancer when they lost not one but two grandmothers to the disease. Shortly thereafter, they felt its impact again when their brother John's wife was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 32. Needless to say, this dreaded disease had become very real to them. Frustrated, they wondered what they could do to help others in the community support those facing breast cancer.
Early 2003, they decided to take action and established "Ounce of Prevention". A not-for-profit organization, "Ounce of Prevention" was created to increase awareness of breast cancer and to raise funds to offer support to those fighting the disease in Marshall County, Indiana. Their goal is to raise money locally to be invested locally to help people they may pass on the street or at the grocery store. And they don’t want this assistance to be restricted by age, economic or belief status as some support systems are, but instead, be available to all in need.
Since its formation, Ounce of Prevention has raised upwards of $200,000 and expanded its fundraisers in many fun and inspiring ways along this awesome journey.
